What is a content management system?

A content management system (CMS) is a process which allows you to update the content of your website yourself - that can be text, videos, images, frequently asked questions, in fact pretty much anything you want to update. These are some examples of what it can allow you to do:

• Allow for a large number of people to contribute to and share stored data
• Control access to data, based on user roles (defining which information users or user groups can view, edit, publish, etc.)
• Aid in easy storage and retrieval of data
• Improve the ease of report writing
• Improve communication between users

In a CMS, data can be defined as nearly anything: documents, videos, images, phone numbers, presentations, and so forth.

Having a content management system included in your website means that you can be anywhere in the world and as long as you have access to an internet connected computer, you can update your website. The changes that you make are instantaneous - they are live and visible to the world as soon as you click 'save'.
